Can an email exchange be considered a legally binding contract, or do I need to involve a lawyer to make my case?

  I recently signed a freelance contract with a client overseas, and we agreed on all the terms over email. But now they're refusing to pay, claiming there was no formal agreement.

  Can an email exchange be considered a legally binding contract, or do I need to involve a lawyer to make my case?
