How have chess calculators changed modern chess

  Grandmasters used to spend hours analyzing positions manually. Now even amateurs check ideas on a chess calculator in a minute. This has accelerated progress, but it has made opening preparation tougher - now any mistake is immediately penalized. Do you think this is a plus or a minus for chess?
